In late January, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities (DLUHC) announced additional funding for the Westmorland and Furness council. Despite this, our councils have chosen to overlook this windfall and are proceeding with huge council tax hikes.
Last April, our councils hit hard-working taxpayers with substantial council tax hikes. Westmorland and Furness council opted for a hike of up to 5.95% — one of the largest increases nationwide.
And what do we have to show for it?
Months of bin collection issues, neglected road repairs despite record government funding, bus operators not receiving government support passed on by the councils, cuts to essential social care services, increased councillors' allowances, and questionable hiring practices.
While they blame government "cuts" and cite "austerity," the reality is different.
Cumbrian council budgets have grown since 2010, after adjusting for inflation.
Instead of managing funds wisely, both councils have squandered resources and are now seeking exceptional financial support from the government.
Now, they're planning yet another 5% tax hike in April. This translates to an additional burden of £86.87 for a Band D property in Westmorland and Furness. Those in the lowest Band A properties will face nearly £60 more.
It's time to send a message. The councils must cut waste, deliver on promised savings, and halt the council tax hike.
