Matty Jackman is celebrating the Conservative Government’s granting of planning consent for the crucial upgrades to the A66.
The upgrades aim to reduce travel times, ease congestion, level up the regional economy, and improve safety.
Matty Jackman expressed, "This is paving the way for a new chapter in the Westmorland and Lonsdale story—one of growth, jobs, and connectivity."
The Development Consent Order, serving as the planning permission for national infrastructure projects, has been granted by the Transport Secretary for the £1 billion upgrade. This comprehensive project includes the dualling of the route from Penrith to Scotch Corner, facilitating the growth of this essential regional artery. Matty Jackman, the Conservative Candidate for Westmorland and Lonsdale, has prioritised connectivity and infrastructure improvements in his constituency plan. He remains committed to advocating for and expediting the completion of these essential upgrades.
Conservatives have worked relentlessly with a range of stakeholders to develop plans and get spades in the ground. In particular, Dr Neil Hudson MP opened the project hub near Penrith in April 2022 and has been in close contact with the Secretary of State and Transport Ministers. He also aided National Highways in resolving local challenges to the planning process. With the DCO deadline extended to resolve issues flagged by regional and local stakeholders, this meticulous detail-oriented approach will help secure the scheme's viability.
The upgraded A66 will help connect people to healthcare, education, and jobs, providing significant economic benefits to the tourism and freight industries. Furthermore, it will provide an economic boost to local companies, the jobs market, and young Cumbrians committed to apprenticeships.
Commenting, Matty Jackman said:
"I am thrilled that we have received approval for this vital upgrade to the A66. Today's announcement is the result of extensive efforts from community campaigners and Conservatives pushing for safer routes and local businesses advocating for enhanced East-West transport links.”
"The Conservative Government is steadfast in its commitment to levelling-up the UK, and this approval marks another significant step in the right direction."
“This upgrade will bring faster travel times with reduced congestion, elevate our regional economy, and most crucially, enhance road safety, resulting in fewer accidents.”
"This initiative will also bring jobs and opportunities to our area. This aligns with my commitment to growth and actively making it happen!"
