Today marks the first anniversary of the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. As I reflect on this milestone, memories rush back with a deep sense of reverence and pride. I had the immense honour of marching in His Majesty's Coronation.
The moment remains vivid in my memory, further shaping my understanding of service and duty. On that historic day, as I stood on the Mall preparing to give the King the Royal Salute, I felt the weight of centuries of tradition resting upon my shoulders.
The occasion was grand and solemn. Yet there was also a personal connection to a legacy founded on principles of service and duty. My grandfather had also participated in the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which made me feel a profound sense of kinship. It had been 69 years, 11 months, and 5 days since my grandfather was part of that special moment, an experience I was now sharing across generations.
My grandfather's service remains a source of inspiration to me. Born in Liverpool and educated at Salisbury Road Council School, his journey in service began before the war, serving with the Liverpool Scottish.
Then, his experiences in the Special Air Service and Airborne Forces in World War II exemplified courage and resilience in the face of adversity. He served in Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden, where he earned an American Bronze Star. His citation noted that, in the direst of circumstances, "at all times, his cheerfulness and courage were unequalled." While it's impossible to make a direct comparison, I aspire to embody such leadership and strength during challenging times.
As I reflect on the past year and the honour of participating in His Majesty's Coronation, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of something so special and crucial.
It serves as a reminder that service is not just a duty; it is a privilege - an opportunity to contribute to something greater than ourselves.
May we continue to uphold the legacy of service passed down to us, and may it guide us through the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead.
Now, I am here to serve Westmorland and Lonsdale - for everyone and for as long as I can.
