Eamont & Shap Ward: Why I Am Supporting Hector Meanwell for Council!
The upcoming Eamont and Shap by-election on Thursday, 27 February 2025, presents an important opportunity to elect a councillor who truly understands and represents our rural community. That’s why I am proud to select and support Hector Meanwell as the Conservative candidate.
Hector is a 25-year-old beef and sheep farmer from Tebay. He is deeply committed to preserving our landscape and supporting those who contribute to our rural economy.
His work in farming is not just about producing high-quality food; it’s about caring for the land and inspiring the next generation through education and hands-on experience. He understands the challenges our agricultural sector faces and will be a strong advocate for our farmers and rural workers.
Beyond his work on the farm, Hector has demonstrated his leadership in the community. As Chairman of the Eden Valley Young Farmers Club from 2023 to 2024, he led initiatives to raise funds for a new play park in Appleby and revitalised the sensory garden at Appleby Primary School’s additional needs building.
"His commitment to local projects demonstrates his ability to turn ideas into action, a skill that will serve him well on the Council."
Hector’s dedication to service extends beyond Cumbria. His international volunteer work in Kenya and Nepal has given him a broader perspective on community resilience and sustainability.
Yet, despite these experiences away from Cumbria, they gave him an even stronger passion for home. This is evident in everything he does, from working on his farm to walking his dogs around Haweswater Reservoir.
Conservatives are standing for election because we believe our rural community deserves better from the current Liberal-controlled Council. As Conservatives, we are committed to:
- Being a strong voice for everyone in the community.
- Supporting farmers, rural workers, and local businesses.
- Improving road safety and maintenance.
- Expanding safer cycle paths and walking routes between our villages.
- Strengthening resilience against extreme weather events like flooding and power outages.
- Delivering better services without increasing council taxes.
For too long, the Liberal-controlled Council has failed our community.
Despite repeatedly raising council taxes AGAIN, we have seen little to no tangible benefits.
Roads remain in poor condition, essential services are stretched thin, and our rural communities continue to be neglected. Instead of working to ease the financial burden on hardworking families and local businesses, the Liberals have chosen to take more from taxpayers while offering little in return.
We deserve a council that prioritises real improvements and responsible spending, not one that treats our communities as a revenue source without delivering results.
Our area needs a councillor who understands the realities of rural life and will fight to ensure our communities receive the support they deserve.
Hector has the energy, vision, and drive to make a real difference. He is not just a candidate—he is one of us, deeply invested in our future.
A vote for Hector Meanwell is a vote for a stronger, more resilient, and more connected rural community.
Let’s support someone who will work tirelessly to protect and enhance our way of life.
